At least five people were killed in four separate road accidents in Dhamrai, Jashore, and Gazipur between late last night and early this morning.
In Dhamrai, two people were killed in a road accident as a speeding truck collided with a stationary lorry from behind in the Dhulivita area of Dhaka-Aricha Highway early today.
The deceased were identified as Kanchan Mia, 23, and Ashraful Islam, 19, helpers of the lorry, said Monirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamrai Police Station.
The accident occurred around 1:00am when the duo was repairing their van, which had broken down on the highway’s Aricha-bound lane.
The speeding truck that struck the lorry has been seized, and a case has been filed with Dhamrai Police Station in connection with the incident, the OC added.
In Jashore, two people were killed in separate road accidents last night.
Noor Islam, 50, a resident of Bhayana village, was hit by a motorcycle on the Jashore-Narail road in the Bhayana area. He was rushed to Jashore General Hospital but died around 9:00pm.
In another incident, Amirul Islam, 40, of Raipara village died after being struck by a truck in the Kanaitala area of the Jashore-Manirampur road. He was brought to the Jashore General Hospital’s emergency department as well, where he was pronounced dead at 8:30pm.
Both deaths were confirmed by Harun Or Rashid, superintendent of the hospital.
In Sreepur, Gazipur, a garment worker was killed after being hit by a bus on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway early this morning.
The deceased, Bilkis Akhter, 30, was from Tantar Mondalia Para village in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district, according to police.
The accident occurred around 7:45am in front of the Cotton Research Centre, Sheikh Mohammad Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Maona Highway Police, told The Daily Star.
According to her factory ID card, Bilkis worked as a junior operator at Trust Knit Wear Limited in the Indraputra area of Sreepur.
Co-workers reported that Bilkis was walking to the factory with a group of colleagues along the highway when the bus struck her from behind. She suffered a fatal head injury and died on the spot, they added.
Law enforcement officials have visited the site, the highway police adding that the body will be sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
Police said the bus was seized, but the driver fled the scene.
